In Challenge Field Hokkaido, we address five material challenges and support 15 promotion plans.

Materiality 01
Improve the productivity and competitiveness of the agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and manufacturing industries.

Hokkaido’s key industries of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries suffer from labor shortages. We will improve their productivity and logistical efficiency by utilizing cutting-edge technologies, such as AI, IoT, and robotics, and pursuing technological integration in other fields.

Establishment of a resource circulating sustainable supply base for future materials, including high value-added steel

Muroran Institute of Technology

In collaboration with various companies, a joint order taking system will be built for high value-added casting products through the collection of high-quality scrap from ships and a steady supply of high value-added steel.

Adoption of an improvement plan for overseas shipments to increase the global competitiveness of Hokkaido’s food products

Kitami Institute of Technology, Otaru University of Commerce, and Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine

A logistics and storage management system will be developed and the food value chain will be strengthened to promote the transportation and export of primary products from airports and sea ports.

Global hub for manufacturing new materials using powder metallurgy and AM technologies

Muroran Institute of Technology

This project is aimed at developing heat-resistant hard materials using a powder metallurgy technology. Reductions in lead times and costs can also be achieved by making use of an AM technology that builds a 3D object from a 3D data file by depositing a material in layers. The project will contribute to the development of power generation facilities as well as the automotive and aircraft parts industries.

Create a smart community and use renewable energy sources.

By utilizing cutting-edge technologies and information networks, we will improve quality of life by ensuring a steady supply of electricity, providing better MaaS transportation services, and developing advanced local infrastructure that is safe, secure and efficient. We will also make good use of the renewable energy sources that are potentially available in abundance in Hokkaido.

Regional roll-out of the Smart Access Vehicle Service (SAVS) and collaborative services

Future University Hakodate and Sapporo City University

Smart Access Vehicle Service (SAVS) is a new platform for public transportation services using AI. Industry-academia collaborations in SAVS will be strengthened to roll out this platform for application in other regions and for further collaborations in other industries and services.

Provide a sustainable supply food and live in harmony with the environment.

We will make good use of the biological resources that can be found in abundance in Hokkaido’s farming and fishing villages, promote the carbon-circulating production, distribution, and reuse of food, add high value to produce and products, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We will also develop production technologies for the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industries that can be adapted to climate change.

Industry and community revitalization in collaboration with big farmers through the effective use of resources derived from vegetable oils

Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Kitami Institute of Technology, and Otaru University of Commerce

Experimental studies into the effective use of resources derived from vegetable oils will be conducted to promote industry and community revitalization in Hokkaido in collaboration with large-scale farmers who can provide a steady supply of unused resources.

Hokkaido University

This project is aimed at creating a research and education base through human resources development for regional industry-academia-government collaborations. In this project, CO2 will be collected in the wine making process so that it can be used for fertilizers and the development of seedlings will be researched.

Commercialize and create startups in the growing aerospace, agriculture, and digital biotechnology industries.

We will support the commercialization of the aerospace, agriculture, and digital biotechnology industries through open innovation among universities, startups, and large companies. We will also identify viable ideas from university students and create university startups that could lead the way in new market creation and innovation.

Build a symbiotic community that fosters good health and social participation.

We aim to create a society that resolves the issues of Japan’s longevity and ultra-low birth rate and provides everyone access to appropriate services that meet their needs, regardless of gender or age. We are also seeking to build a symbiotic community that will allow everyone to lead a healthy life, choose their own way of life and working, raise a family, and engage in social participation.
